Europe needs to face up to the global ecological crisis
Berlin, 6 October 2026 – Wildfires, drought and heat-related deaths in Europe this summer are another wake-up call: The ecological crisis requires urgent action. Yet the European Union and many of its Member States are weakening some of their key climate and environmental policies, as policymakers respond to public concerns about the cost of living, economic uncertainty and recent crises and conflicts. The challenge is to build bridges between the increasingly urgent need to stabilise the Earth system and difficult political, economic and social realities. A European conference of government and parliament advisory bodies will be held in Berlin on October 6, 2026 to discuss how to move forward.
